There has been quite a paradigm shift through the years when it comes to fat and fashionable. Adina and Kurt Karst found this turn-of-the-century plaque in a thrift shop.
"Fat-Ten-U Foods make the thin plump and comely and impart vim to the debilitated. They cool the blood and prevent unpleasant perspiration. A month's treatment, $2.00". It is accompanied by the following testimonial. "Fat-Ten-U-Foods increased my weight 39 pounds, gave me new womanly vigor & developed me finely. My two sisters also use Fat-Ten-U-Foods and because of our newly found vigor we have taken up Grecian dancing and have roles in all local productions."
Today, that statement seems other-worldly. How many times have you heard any woman say "I've gained 40 pounds, and I feel GREAT!"? Thin may be in now, but it wasn't always; fat was where it was at. There is a growing number of people who are becoming aware that society's obsession with weight is unhealthy. Maybe one day, with the help of fat activists, we will live in a world where body size is insignificant.
Grecian dancing, anyone?
